DAIR Innovation Network

The purpose of the Network is to provide a fee-based suite of offerings that support DAIR’s mandate to drive collaboration within the physical innovation hub and across the broader aerospace ecosystem, as well as a forum for design thinking and facilitated engagement.

How does it work?

The Innovation Network is designed to accelerate innovation through a cyclical and iterative process.

Held annually in October, the DAIR to Innovate conference brings together  200+ aerospace stakeholders to discuss & share insights on topics critical to  the sector’s competitiveness.

Subsequent Design Thinking Workshop held in January to convert challenges into a solution roadmap – which can help your organization and the broader ecosystem shape project applications, areas of focus, and strategy.

The outputs will be used by DAIR in evaluation and review of its programming, specifically at the Annual General Meeting in September, as well as support the planning for upcoming events, joint applications, and input into strategy and policy work by other organizations and government bodies.

Accelerate innovation – achieve results faster than a go-it-alone approach; take advantage of facilitated introductions, the opportunity for joint proposals, and access to streamlined application processes.

Access programs & funding – project funding opportunities through programs like the DAIR Green Fund (GF) and Supplier Development Initiative (SDI).

Access technology and expertise – benefit from the expertise and experience of others; participation in the DAIR Digital Manufacturing program, making use of Siemens’ plant and process simulation software in a de-risked and reduced cost environment.

Build community & visibility – promote your capabilities as you establish new partnerships; explore technology transfer opportunities with academics; uncover solutions in a collaborative environment.

Shape the innovation ecosystem – provide input into the services that DAIR provides through participation at the Design Thinking Workshop and attendance at the AGM.

Who is eligible to join?

The Innovation Network is designed to accelerate innovation through a cyclical and iterative process.

  • Small, medium and large companies working in, or with an interest in the aerospace sector
  • Academic institutions with a focus on aerospace research and/or training
  • Companies providing services of benefit across the aerospace value chain

Collaborator Benefits

1) Annual fee due in summer with a streamlined renewal process

2) There are 3 sub-classes of membership, determined by 1) size of donation to DAIR, 2) size of investment in a DAIR project, or 3) lease terms at the DAIR hub

3) DAIR can help to define your training and professional development requirements and connect with an academic partner that can help develop and deliver a training solution to match those requirements; depending on the project, joint funding applications and project management support by DAIR is a potential opportunity

4) Workshops will apply design thinking principles, a unique group problem solving approach that will deliver solution-focused results

5) Once approved by DAIR, an opportunity to showcase solutions or activities to the network via a DAIR hosted seminar/webinar

6) As new office & lab space is created at the hub, network partners will have the first opportunity to discuss the opportunity for co-location

7) Leverage DAIR’s network of connections and take advantage of facilitated introductions, as well as information from DAIR’s proprietary listing of world-class equipment available at academic partner locations

8) This can include connections to potential partners, group funding application support, and project management

9) For academic network partners, the opportunity for your researchers to have their work promoted through a DAIR-hosted academic publishing repository

DAIR has a strategic partnership with the Ontario Aerospace Council, supporting their work as the voice of the Ontario aerospace industry, as well as reciprocal memberships with other key organizations.

          Project Title: Development of Safe and Reliable Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS) for a Solar Battery Electric UAS

          Project Description: The project is to develop Safe and Reliable RESS for Superwake's Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) commercial applications. As Superwake begins its drive towards commercialization of its product, the need for conformity to regulatory standards is critical to the success of the product. This project focuses on a product conformity related to a regulatory framework such as Transport Canada Advisory Circular (AC) No. 922-001 – Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Safety Assurance. More specifically, a more complex RESS is required in advanced operations such as beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), flying in controlled airspace and near people.

          Environmental Impact: Low carbon footprint and replacement of aero vehicles that run on fossil fuels. The use of smaller solar battery electric drones can replace some applications of small, manned utility aircraft used in commercial applications. The cost to operate these drones would be substantially lower using solar battery electric drones.

          An aerospace senior executive with over 20 years of in-depth experience in operations, supply chain, and program management, Nancy Barber has spent much of her career in a product development environment involving large-scale clean sheet commercial and business aircraft programs. Nancy owns her own consulting business, Barber Complete Consultancy Inc, and is currently active in the aerospace industry, focused on leadership development, mergers & acquisitions, commercial strategy, product strategy and business development.

          Prior to Nancy establishing BCC Inc., she held the position of Chief Operating Officer, Bombardier Business Aircraft, responsible for planning, assembly, and delivery of the Learjet, Challenger, and Global business aircraft as well as the industrialization strategy of Bombardier’s operational footprint. Nancy also held the role of Vice President, responsible for the Global 7500 and Global 8000, and New Aircraft Studies, where she led proactive management or program milestones and cost commitments supporting the ramp up of the Global 7500 aircraft, the largest purpose-built business aircraft world-wide, and its successful entry into service in 2018.
          Nancy is a passionate promoter of women in aerospace serving as a mentor, coach, and speaker. In 2020, Nancy was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, and the Northern Lights Aero Foundation awarded her with the Elsie Award for Business in recognition of her outstanding contributions to aviation and aerospace in Canada.

          In June 2022, Nancy was appointed President of Women in Aerospace Canada, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to expanding women’s opportunities for leadership and professional development as well as increasing their visibility in the aerospace community by creating a professional network in Canada and across the globe.

          Nancy graduated with an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Waterloo and has successfully completed the Queen's University Executive Leadership Program. She is published in the Journal of Sport Management as well as the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
